Reflection: This essay was mainly about the psychology behind installation are and historical reasoning for its importance. Installation art broke the boundaries of typical 2d and 3d art. Installation art is very controversial because it arises questions like “what is art” and ordinary questions about everyday life. This article was an interesting read and definitely helped give me and insight on what my installation art project is supposed to provoke in my viewers.

After conversing about my ideas I have gotten some new insight on how I want my project to be portrayed. Initially I was gonna make a project that transformed the space into a completely new object. But, after talking about my ideas, I now realize I’m going to transform a space so that it is still recognizable but just has a new meaning attached to it. It will be interesting to see how my site turns into a completely new meaning.

For my fieldwork, I decided that my material is going to be tin toil. Tin foil is a very versatile material that is very malleable material that can be manipulated in several ways. It is soft enough to texture and rip to make shapes but also rigid enough to form into a holdable material.

For my sight. I decided that I wanted to get away from cliche art installations and do something different. The two places I decided would be the most captivating and interesting would be the hockey rink and a local basketball hoop. Turning a basketball hoop into something unrecognizable can help change the meaning of the hoop and how humans interact with the space. I’m also interested in seeing how sports equipment can be changed into art.

To me, 4D art is art that is has an element of time. This means that either as a display with life and nature as a factor or as a video, 4D element develops over time. One thing that is interesting about 4D art is that it doesn’t necessarily have a particular meaning at the beginning or end, but the mood is developed over time. I also like how 4D art can be still

ephemeral- once a performance is over it will last in the audiences memory

I will admit, at the start of the class I did not enjoy the course. I felt like there was too much outside work with no direction of where things were going. But as the course evolved and went along I increasingly liked it more. I didn’t like making objects on tracing paper but I understand its purpose. I personally started liking the course when I created marks with the objects in step 4 and my final design in step 5. From there my mark up was born and then everything snowballed into this extremely cool sculpture that I am pretty proud of. I would recommend having a little more insight towards the beginning of the course so that we know where things will go. Although, I understand that the end goal wasn’t the sculpture, it was the process of going through the steps and walking up to a sculpture at the end of everything and what accumulated.

Overall, I think this course helped me create an awesome sculpture and I am now excited for the 4D part of the course.

I learned that people thought my project was very appealing, but things could have been tweaked

The cans in the big 3 circles should have been the bottom of the cans, not the tops.

It made people have different feelings. People said it reminded them of a spider web from the finishing line. Another person said that it looked like a blooming flower

People also thought my sculpture was dangering from the snap back of the petals.

Overall, I wouldn’t change much besides an updated pulley mechanism and using different parts of the cans to layer the bottom of the circles.

Working on this sculpture was nothing but blood sweat and tears. I cut myself several times, burned myself several times, and I even managed to get a metal shaving in my eye. But you know what they say, no pain no gain.

So, starting on this project, I created a backboard that would be my base. From there I assembled my circles with a bending method to make them perfectly circular. I then glued and taped them down so they would stay in place.

After my structure was finished I began randomly cutting cans and layering them in between the circles so that it would have a textured look. After that I layered the bottom of the circles with the tops of pop cans. The idea behind this was to create several circles inside of the circles to make a circular pattern.

After these steps were done I began cutting my cans in the petal shapes they needed to be in and took them to a rock outside of the Fine Arts building and hammered away at them until I was satisfied with each and every one of them.

From this step I made my hinges and glued on my cans. After my cans were on the project I poked holes in the back of the cans and 4 inches under the hinges to align my pulley system. From there I attached the string to the cans and pulled the strings through the outside holes.

The finally, I tied a central knot on the tension points of each of the cans so that when the lever was pulled it would create a “blooming flower” effect

My final product was very satisfying and I am very pleased with how this project turned out.

So for my final project I needed to make a mini markup of my mechanical pulley system in order for it to be successful and achieve what I want. After messing around with make shift hinges and pulley systems, I came to a conclusion on cutting the cans in a pedal shape, putting a hole in the bottom for a string, and a cardboard hinge to help the pedals move back and forth. The angles of the cardboard worked perfectly for them to snap back into place. After this mock up I knew what to do on my final design

This article is very interesting to me because he uses a mechanical system that responds to movement, something somewhat similar to what I am doing in my own work
