Final Video Critique Response

In my final video critique I learned a lot about myself and my thought process. The feedback I received was overall positive. Most people thought my crash scene between myself and my car crash was the part that stuck out the most. It also came across that a lot of my videos were short and snappy so it pulled across my idea of being fast.

Overall, I learned that I like video editing and I am happy with the way this video turned out. I’m excited to do explore different sorts of video art in the future.

Performance Final

For my final performance video I decided to go to the library and play with the idea of asmr and loudness. I did this by setting up my camera in a book shelf to look directly into my face. During the duration of my video the audience watches as I pick books off of the shelf and flip through the pages to build suspense. After flipping through the book to my desired length I threw it behind me on a book shelf which made a loud crash. Since this crash was loud it makes the audience see how books can be a loud object instead of being a quiet one. It makes the audience break the current thoughts about what a book is and what it means. I felt that this performance was a lot better than my first since I was altering a material into a new light instead of making my body the performance.

Performance art process

For my performance art project I decided to shoot my first fieldwork in glass studio and I decided that I wanted my performance to be of me blowing glass. I shot my video at about 5 minutes long of me blowing up the glass, manipulating it, and heating it up. When I ended the video I blew the glass into a giant bubble then dipped it into the water.

I felt that me blowing glass would have been a good manipulation of a material to show how glass can be manipulated but after talking with my instructor we decided that blowing glass wasn’t really altering a material to make the audience see it in a new light so I had to change my material for my performance.

Video project critique

When we critiqued my video in class we learned that my video used a little too much music in the background that didn’t exactly make total sense to my “pregnant pause”. Overall, it was said that my video was well edited and it made sense, just a few minor changes could really enhance my video. I also learned that it was a good move to use past icons like Roadrunner and Woody Woodpecker to portray the element of speed. Someone also suggested using some other iconic elements like Redbull’s slogan Redbull gives you wings”.

For the final I decided to not do much in terms of editing my current fieldwork since I already wasn’t far off. So, all I had to do was put in more iconic themes of speed while adding my own shot videos. For my shot videos I decided that since I am always rushing around on a longboard that it would be best to shoot my videos of me riding it.

Video Final

After completing this project I learned that I like to make video art. So, this entire process has been semi-enjoyable for me. In my original video I created a fairly cleanly edited video that made sense so I felt like I did not want to change my video much for the final. In the final I took the advice of the instructor and tuned back the music used in the video and added more of my own shots. For my own shots I decided to shoot me on my longboard since that is my way of fastly and swiftly getting around.

In the end I felt that my video was well edited, balanced, and well done. In fieldwork 1 I created a well made video so in my final I didn’t change too much. The result gets my “pregnant pause” across while also creating a nice exaggeration.

Video Fieldwork 2

For this fieldwork we had to write down the main steps of our “pregnant pause” on note cards. After that we had to shuffle and rearrange our steps to attempt to see if our steps were adjusted in a more interesting and intriguing way.

When I shuffled the cards I did find some interesting combinations but I felt that the layout that I already had was the best for what I wanted to portray. I did get some ideas from the shuffled cards and I did implement them into my videos. But, I felt like my video was best laid the first attempt.

Video Fieldwork 1

For my “pregnant pause” I decided to exaggerate what its like to rush around and complete tasks while trying to maintain energy. In my life I am constantly rushing and trying to complete everything that needs to be done so I felt like I could well portray this in my video. I used old popular cartoon icons like Woody Woodpecker and Roadrunner to illicit speed. I used a game to illicit tasks that are being completed. I also used several crashing scenes to show how your energy may leave you momentarily and you feel as if you are crashing but you would have to keep on pushing. My video ends the way it started with the same elements reversed to loop back to the beginning

Video Art Reading Notes

Some practicing contemporary artists don’t consider Video Art fine art so it gets labeled under “New Media Art”

Video art often explores the relationship between society and technology

There are different aspects of video art that can be explored for instance one can explore the aspects of photography and film while others focus on video time.

Some artists are interested in blending fields like painting and video.

Video art can poke at current day issues and pull them into light

Some artists try and use the film as a medium as an extension of another to create new images.

Video art can do a lot of story telling without actually hitting something on the nose

Video art continues to grow rapidly as it becomes more widespread to new audiences

What is performance art

Performance art is usually performed by 1 person

“It is the action of the body, the authenticity of an activity, that frames it as Performance Art “

Performance Art is “an ephemeral event which shares characteristics with a nexus of activities including play, game, sport, and ritual”

grand endurance work is where one damages their body to the point of events like blood and bruises to capture the audiences intruige

focused on actual body experiences

performance art is not acting

meant to provoke “provoke synaesthetic relationships”

“Performance emerges from the history of theatre and begins as a counterpoint to realism.

Performance emerges from the history of painting and gains its force and focus after Jackson Pollock’s ‘action painting’.

Performance represents a return to investigations of the body most fully explored by shamans, yogis and practitioners of alternative healing arts.”

performance art is not supposed to be thought of prior to the event

reminds audience to live in the moment and savor it

galleries are starting to open doors to performance art pieces

Installation Critique Response

Tanner gave me a fresh view of my installation piece with his insight. I appreciated that he gave me literal feedback while also recognizing my strengths of the project.

I understand that I should have altered the material in a different way so that is could not be distinguishable

I also wish I would have used more material to make it bigger. It would have been cool to make the viewer question their size in relation to my piece.

Im pretty happy with how my installation project turned out. Although their are minor things I would change I think I did a pretty good job and creating a solid piece of installation art.
