CHAPTER NINE

form- physical manifestation of an idea

context- the idea itself

volume- empty 3d form/ solid Mass

earthwork- large scale outdoor work

site-specific- made for a particular area

point- basic mark

line-created through a series of adjacent points

orientation- lines horizontal, vertical, or diagonal position

direction- implied movement of a line

continuity- can increase movement and form

actual lines- real. implied- created through mental connections

plane- 2 axises but minimal thickness

volume- enclosed area of 3d space

space- area around or within a substance

texture- visual or tactile quality of a form

light can advance or obscure our understanding of form

ambient light- encompasses an entire space or setting

directed light- localized and focused like a spotlight

hue-based on wavelength

value- lightness/darkness

intensity-saturation

temperature-psychological heat

symbolic color-culturally based

CHAPTER TEN

grouping-separate visual elements brought together

containment-a unifying force created by the outer edge of a composition.

proximity-distance between visual elements

continuity-flowing together between parts

repetition-same visual element repeated several times

closure-the mind making sense of connected fragmentary elements

matrix- 3d grid

balance-distribution of weight or force

radial symmetry- symmetry in a circle around a centerpoint

asymmetrical balance- creates equilibrium among elements

scale- size of a form when compared with human size

proportion-size of an object within an image

emphasis- gives particular prominence to part of a design

focal point- a compositional device used to create emphasis

rhythm- organization of multiple elements into a deliberate pattern
